Hotel Review: Thornbury Castle

A two-day escape from the city of London led me to the serene English countryside, where I checked in to Thornbury Castle—a historic gem located just 30 minutes from Bristol and about 2.5 hours from London. Originally built in 1511 by Edward Stafford, the castle was seized by King Henry VIII in 1521 following Stafford’s execution for treason. Once a royal residence, Thornbury Castle has since been transformed into England’s only luxury Tudor castle hotel, now part of the Relais & Châteaux collection.

The property boasts 26 beautifully restored bedchambers, offering a range of accommodations including deluxe rooms, suites, and villas. Guests even have the opportunity to stay in the same room once shared by King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. For a truly regal experience, the Catherine of Aragon Tower Suite features the largest four-poster bed in any UK hotel—at 10 feet wide.

From the grand stone archways at the entrance to the rich wood paneling and opulent chandeliers, the castle exudes elegance and historic charm. Each room is thoughtfully adorned with rich tapestries, effortlessly blending medieval authenticity with modern luxury.

The castle is set on 15 acres of beautifully manicured grounds, with sculpted hedges, a charming vegetable garden, and peaceful outdoor seating areas perfect for unwinding. Thornbury Castle is also home to a 3AA Rosette restaurant, renowned for its exceptional food quality and service. Guests can choose between a curated tasting menu or à la carte dining. We indulged in a three-course meal, where each dish was presented beautifully.

Breakfast was included with our stay and featured a generous variety of options, from fresh pastries, fruit, and yogurt to eggs benedict, omelets, and more. The castle also offers a traditional afternoon tea service in its cozy common room and library, complete with working fireplaces.

We stayed in the Gloucester Room, located on one of the highest points of the castle, offering a stunning view of the gardens. The room was thoughtfully appointed with modern comforts, including a safe, minibar, luxury bathroom amenities, soft cotton linens, and even a complimentary decanter of Thornbury Castle’s signature sloe gin.

Whether you’re heading into the English countryside to relax or explore, there’s no shortage of things to do at Thornbury Castle. Guests can book activities such as archery, axe throwing, and historic castle tours, or venture out to explore nearby towns like Bristol and Bath. For those seeking a bit more adventure, there’s even a clay shooting school and falconry experiences available.

Thornbury Castle is the perfect destination to unwind, immerse yourself in history, and truly step back in time, all while enjoying exceptional service, exquisite dining, and the tranquility of the English countryside.
