During my one-night stay at Masseria Cimino, a charming Southern Italian farmhouse, I truly embraced the essence of the region.
Masseria means farmhouse, and Masseria Cimino is a renovated farmhouse that was built in the 18th century. Surrounded by olive trees and only minutes from the Adriatic ocean, this masseria is the perfect getaway for relaxation, with each meal served farm-to-table. With only 14 rooms, you feel right at home and well taken care of, as the family-run hotel treats guests like family. Located in the Apulia region of southern Italy, Masseria Cimino deserves a stop on your travel list.
Accommodation
While some rooms are located in the ancient tower, others are steps away in the farmhouse. The interiors are chalky white, chic, rustic, and every detail of the property reflects the beauty of the local culture and surrounding landscape. We stayed in two adjacent rooms in the farmhouse, which were cool, spacious, and cozy, with a minimalist aesthetic that brought a peaceful feeling. Moreover, the bathrooms were crafted with local stone and marble.
Exploring the Grounds
All I wanted to do was explore. The boundaries of the property were walls from the ancient city of Egnatia, founded in the 6th century. On the drive in, we couldn’t help but notice the rows shiny, red tomatoes lining the road before reaching the Masseria Cimino gate. Once the gate opened, we saw rows of vegetable plots on the property, and I felt excited knowing our dinner would come from here. We couldn’t resist trying a few tomatoes as we walked by zucchinis, peppers, squash, and eggplant. I couldn’t stop staring at the size of the olive trees; judging by the trunk size, they must of been centuries old.
I noticed bikes on-site, a small gym, and a stunning stone pool overlooking the golf course. A beautifully manicured golf course faced the ocean. Afterward, I spent some time relaxing on the tanning chairs while reading a book. The property was remarkably quiet; all I could hear was the sound of pages turning and the gentle rustle of the breeze through the olive trees.
Farm-to-Table Dining
As night began to fall, I joined the other guests for an intimate outdoor aperitivo before dinner. The staff arranged the tables according to the size of each party, and they served dinner buffet-style. Everything was homemade with seasonal vegetables from the garden on the property. On this beautiful, candlelit evening, we indulged in mozzarellas, green beans, carrots, ricotta-stuffed zucchini flowers, eggplants topped with cheese, tomatoes, peppers, and meatballs. The dinner was phenomenal, and you could truly taste the freshness of the ingredients- the same vegetables I had walked by earlier in the garden. Naturally, no meal is complete without dessert, and we enjoyed fresh watermelon and a delicious homemade cream pastry cake.
The next morning, I eagerly anticipated breakfast- my favorite meal of the day- and after last night’s feast, I couldn’t wait to see what was offered. Breakfast was also served buffet-style, featuring cheeses, salamis, fresh juices, jams, homemade cakes, cereals, yogurt, and fresh fruit.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I would say 1 night in this Italian farmhouse was not enough. I would love to return to Masseria Cimino someday. I highly recommend it for a relaxing weekend stay, whether in summer or during the cooler months. It is a place to unwind, take in nature, and escape while enjoying traditional Italian food. Here, you truly experience the essence of southern Italy.
