I recently checked into The Shelborne by Proper in Miami Beach for a two-night staycation, and it turned out to be the perfect blend of history, design, and modern luxury. From sunrise rides along the beach to lounging by the iconic Art Deco pool deck, every moment felt both indulgent and refreshingly light. Nestled right on Collins and 18th, steps from Lincoln Road, the property truly feels like a destination within the city—where you can unwind, explore, and taste Miami’s vibrant culture without ever leaving the hotel.

History & Legacy
The Shelborne originally opened in 1941 and swiftly became a vibrant symbol of Miami’s Art Deco glamour. Designed by iconic figures like Igor Polevitzky and later shaped by Morris Lapidus, the hotel showcased Miami Modernism—a perfect, fusion of geometric lines and tropical charm.
After decades, the hotel closed for a transformative $100 million renovation. Guided by Proper Hospitality, it reopened in May 2025 as The Shelborne by Proper.

Design & Interiors
Walking through the doors, you can immediately sense the heartfelt balancing act of past and present. ADC Atelier took on the task of weaving Miami’s Art Deco legacy with modern tropical aesthetics. The result? An interior bathed in soft, natural light, earthy palettes (honed travertine, warm woods, soft-beige handwoven wall coverings), layered with custom ceramic sconces and vintage-inspired yet contemporary furniture.
With 251 rooms, including penthouses, each space feels curated and considered. The rooms honestly feel like little retreats: soft earth tones and large windows frame both ocean and city views.
The oceanfront king room was a dream to wake up in. The minimalist wooden touches, thoughtfully placed mirrors that catch and reflect the morning light, and Aesop amenities in the marble-framed bathroom added such a luxurious yet grounded feel.

Dining & Food Experience
The Food and Beverage program, led by Michelin-starred Chef Abram Bissell and beverage visionary Christopher Lowder, brings Latin American and Caribbean flavors alive.
I tried the Miami Spice menu and praised how fresh, light, and unforgettable everything tasted. Notably, the 100% seed‑oil‑free approach ensured nothing felt heavy—perfectly balanced, vibrant, and made with top-quality ingredients.
Breakfast was such a highlight—my favorite was the oyster mushroom omelet stuffed with spinach and goat cheese, paired with fresh juices that made the morning feel so energizing. Honestly, you really can’t go wrong with the food here.
Don’t forget to stop by the café tucked into the lobby—it feels like its own little hidden gem inside the hotel. In the mornings, it was my go-to spot for a matcha latte and fresh pastries before heading out for the day. The design is just as thoughtful as the rest of the property.

Amenities & Wellness
The Shelborne feels designed to be lived in, relaxed in, and rejuvenated in.
- Historic pool & Art Deco diving board: A nostalgic touch, fully restored, complete with cabanas, chaise lounges, and a beach club vibe. (The lounge chairs at the pool are so comfortable you won’t want to get up).
- Wellness offerings: From yoga, Pilates, breathwork, and guided meditation classes to 24-hour access to a state-of-the-art fitness center with reformers—my morning pilates and gym experience was a highlight of my mornings.
- Curated guest experiences: Sunscreen was provided at the pool which was a great touch as well as Bloom Nutrition stocked at the gym and waters provided throughout the property.
- Mobility & local discovery: Complimentary bikes for sunrise rides (which I took and loved), and an all-electric Lotus car for exploring the area.
- Vibrant daily happenings: Yoga at dawn, DJ sessions by night, and happy hours with craft cocktails and games provide an immersive experience without stepping off-property.

The Shelborne by Proper is more than a hotel—it’s a place that respects its Art Deco roots while offering carefully considered modern luxury. It’s a restful, stylish, and deeply curated hidden gem in Miami Beach that makes for a great home whether you’re visiting from another city or enjoying a staycation.
